With Harvard Professor and Black scholar, Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., being arrested last week, it seems that the media has put a spotlight back on racism and corrupt police officers running wild since the election of President Barack Obama. Brooklyn MC, Maino, recently spoke to HipHopWired about police brutality increasing as well as his recent dealings with the “rogue squad” when this May, his best friend “80,” was shot in the back by NYPD. Maino revealed, “Yo man, it’s disgusting. It’s something that we’ve been enduring all our lives and before we were born. In the situation with my peoples we got the money and the means to make sure that they don’t get away with it but what about the families that don’t have…

The good news is that Maino is much more than a feel good story. On If Tomorrow Comes Maino proves himself to be a legitimate rapper, albeit one who relies more on personality and history than rhymes to carry his music. In some ways he’s following the blueprint laid down by Plies, whose own “criminal gone legit, but not too legit” story echoes Maino’s. GlobalGrind caught up with the new voice of Brooklyn to speak simply about the success he’s endured in his life. “I can only define success by me, where I’m at right now in my life. Where I come from, for me to get to the position where I’m at. If it all ended today, I exceeded all expectations put on my life. For me to have lived the way I lived and make a career out of it to get to the point to be able to put out an album. It’s hard just to get to that point. That’s a success story in itself. Whether I go no further, from this point…I’m good.” Check out what else Maino had to say now! IF TOMORROW COMES… – pick it up now!
In this day and age of WWE-inspired rap music, keeping it real doesn’t count for much anymore. But if Maino has his way, he will always choose authenticity in hip hop over the exaggerated, almost faux lyrics that so much hip-hop music seems to portray today. In an exclusive interview with BET.com, Maino talked about his new album and the path he took to get there, while explaining why he chose an honest approach to making music instead of following the trends.
